Putting the idea of a portfolio life to work

We are programmed to be given instructions…

And because of this, the notion of finding one’s own opportunities for employment is difficult for many people. Yes, we like the idea of a portfolio life and it makes good sense, but the self reliance required is hard to harness. For many years people have been socialized with the idea that a job happens in a specific place where there is a chain of command and a boss who will tell you what to do. Your responsibilities are contained in a job description. Now, as someone who has embraced a portfolio life you have to give yourself the instructions and create the sense of place within which to operate. Self employment in the framework of a portfolio life requires the initiative and the drive to do a good deal of own desk research and investigation to uncover opportunities. It also requires energetic networking.

It’s good that technology has come to the rescue…

In a famous book “The Death of Distance” written some years ago the author Frances Cairncross predicted that distance would become almost irrelevant if technology was to become fully utilized. This was before Facebook and Twitter. It was before videoconferencing and remote working became properly established. Now, with websites like www.odesk.com the concept of working internationally whilst staying in your same home base has become a reality. oDesk recruits people in the less expensive parts of the world to perform functions for which there are shortages of people and greater expense in the first world. All done remotely, charged and paid for in US Dollars.

The notion of working from home used to be associated with mothers wanting to care for their children while earning some pocket money. Now increasing numbers of professionals are embracing the idea of staying home to work and be more productive in the process. The website at-HomeWorks.com advertises a range of professional job, and project work activities.

There is also increasing activity on job sites where skills are offered to the highest bidder. No more fixed salaries and controlled fee rates.

Self Employment is not more risky….

…as many people seem to think. In fact it is a way of minimizing risk. You are in control of your own destiny, and although the thought of that may be frightening, is it less frightening than working for a major multinational who can make you redundant or go out of business suddenly. Speak to the people of investment banks like Lehman Brothers or Merrill Lynch.
