Overcome the limitations and frustrations of a single job lifestyle by investing your skills in a portfolio of work streams. Here you'll find the information, resources, opportunities and the support you need to start or grow a portfolio life.

Step 4: Every hand also has a pinky

And this represents something you would like to do to make a difference. To give something back, like working with AIDS orphans, or doing something on a regular basis for the homeless, or for old people or global warming or whatever your heart says.

Because we are so often confronted with the poverty and desperation of people whose lives are not as comfortable as ours, many of us feel the need to make a contribution somewhere. Most people have the desire to help, and to do something for those less fortunate. But there is often a lack of coordination between the organizations and individuals who need the help and those who can offer it.

To complete step 4 think about a sector of the community which you would like to “adopt” as your area of special interest. It may be anything from child welfare to aids orphans or helping at a hospice or whatever. It can be the blind, the disabled, the old people, or helping a rural community to get clean water. Whatever you decide, make the effort to do the research, to link up with the cause you have chosen, and make a commitment. You may even undertake a project where you visit each one of a short list of causes before deciding. Try also to connect your own abilities with the cause you wish to serve. So, if it is fundraising, or event management, or serving on the board of a charity, make sure you are able to serve the purpose meaningfully. Try to meet with other volunteers who are already committed to the organization, and check out if it is going to work for you, and if you are going to have the opportunity to make a significant contribution.

The sense of “making a difference” as part of the “pinky” in your portfolio, is a source of great satisfaction experienced by people living a portfolio life.
